Poems for some years

2016
The year was the wildest of rides,
UK people took sides.
The referendum left all dumfounded.
Brexiters’ promises abounded
In the US, Trump burst onto the scene.
As a candidate, he was most obscene.
The system’s so sick
Instead of giving him a kick, they elected the prick
And Hillary was confounded.
For the poor people suffering from war,
Instead of less they got more.
Nothing was resolved.
But governments were absolved,
By the spooks, who caused all the gore.
2017
If you have any hope for the year.
You’ve likely consumed too much beer.
Doom gloom and despair,
Are all in the air
And the 1% will stand up and cheer.
2016 in Costa Rica
Weary peons trudge home to rest
Glowing sunsets over the far mountains.
Clouds painted with molten gold, flare against the bluest sky.
Needled pines silhouetted against the final glow.
The twinkling lights in the valley herald the emerging stars.
2017 in Costa Rica. SAME OL SAME OL
Weary peons wing home to rest
Glowing sunsets over the far mountains.
Clouds painted with molten gold, flare against the bluest sky.
Needled pines silhouetted against the last glimmer.
The twinkling lights in the valley herald the emerging stars.
2016-3
The earth is warming,
Countless factories belch smoke.
Governments promised action.
The promises were broke.
2017-3
Hotter still the earth,
City dwellers choke,
We continue our greedy consumption,
One by one, we start to croak.
A Haiku for 2016 and 2017
Trump blustered all year.
His boasting drowned sweet birdsong.
Will the birds sing more?
